I recently discovered that my neighbor, Carol Richardson Marty, is also in the wedding business — she is the Carol behind Carol’s Creative Confections! One day she told me about her business and said that sometimes she has — WAIT FOR IT — extra cake. And could she bring some by. I almost fainted. Seriously. You know how I feel about cake! Look:

Carol’s newest creation are the Cake Balls pictured above — small balls of cake wrapped in delicious chocolate goodness. Available in a variety of flavors, these moist bites of cake heaven will melt in your mouth. And because they are deliciousness rolled into a small package, they are easy on the budget and the waistline! Learn more at www.carolscreativeconfections.com.

LOVE the Spaghetti & Meatballs cupcakes, and the artist’s palette!
Carol was kind enough to donate some of her Cake Balls for Paperpalooza on July 11th. Speaking of that, it was a big hit, but we still have things leftover — I am sure we’ll be advertising Paperpalooza-twooza soon.
Thanks again Carol!

I recently got back from a wonderful weekend trip to Orcas Island, one of my favorite places on earth. I wish I could live there year round, but I think that dream will have to wait awhile longer. It is such a peaceful place — there is something about being on the San Juan Islands that really makes time stop — you feel like you really got away.

Some pics from Cascade Falls in Moran State Park:

We splurged on this beautiful linocut print on display at one of the shops in Eastsound.

Almost at the last minute, on the way to the ferry home, I discovered Warm Valley Orchard (which I am now calling The Yarn Farm). Did I tell you I’m a knitter? That’s kind of a lie, as I haven’t finished anything lately. Didn’t stop me from picking up some new hand-spun wool and super-soft alpaca.

If you ever have the chance to visit the San Juan Islands, I highly recommend it. It would be a great honeymoon idea, as well (and not too expensive, depending on how far away you are). When you go, don’t miss my favorite place on Orcas: The Orcas Artworks and Cafe Olga. They have tons of beautiful things from local artists, and a lovely cafe with lots of deliciousness!
Back to work… for now…

I yelped out loud the day I saw the trailer for the new movie Seven Pounds. Will Smith and an intriguing story was enough to hook me, but then I caught a glimpse of a Heidelberg Windmill press in action and I immediately went a-Googling.
I don’t think what I’m about to write is giving away any of the story, but this is fair warning in case you don’t like any spoilers, and haven’t seen it yet.

Ready…?
Ok:
Will fixes Rosario Dawson’s printing press for her. Aww… I elbowed my sister-in-law in the theater and whispered, “Now that’s a man.”
It’s a really sad movie. And to be honest I have mixed feelings about it. But if you are in the mood for something heavy, it’s definitely worth watching.
I must say it’s going to be handy to have a pop-culture frame of reference now. When people ask me what I do for a living, I don’t have to stammer, “Well… it’s kind of weird… uhhh…” Now I can just say, “Did you see the movie, Seven Pounds…?”
But really, you need a lively distraction or a comedy chaser immediately after watching this movie. May I suggest:
?
That oughta do it.
Did you see the movie? What did you think?

Me me me!
I was recently (ok fairly recently) tagged by Ellie Moore over at The Lucky Nest to do this “Six Random Things About Me” post. Ellie is actually Miss Lovebug, all married up and onto new business, which apparently includes rocking her Blog of Note. Pretty cool, eh?
Here we go! No pretty pictures, but a whole lotta dirt:
1) I really don’t like to patronize movies that have titles like “Saving Private Ryan” or “Chasing Amy.” Something about the use of the present progressive form of the verb BUGS me. And you know what? I don’t really know if “present progressive” is totally the correct name, but I don’t care, it still bugs me.
2) I can’t charge my cell phone without turning it completely off. I am convinced it charges less efficiently unless it’s off. My husband tells me I am wrong (and he would know), but I just can’t do it.
3) I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable. Just kidding, I hate velvet. I also hate corduroy and newsprint. (Incidentally, my husband Dave hates touching almost all paper. I am not sure how I ended up with someone who can’t touch paper, but other than that our relationship works
.)
4) I have a dance for when I’m brushing my teeth. Don’t judge me — it helps me keep track of what quadrant of my mouth I’m on. That’s another lie. Quadrants be damned! I am just a spaz. I must confess that I actually dance a lot. Think Napoleon Dynamite, though. (Not good.)
5) Johannes Gutenberg and I have the same birthday. According to some fairly sketchy internet sources, anyway. I don’t know how well they kept track of these things in the 1400s. Still, imagine my delight!
6) I am really scared of roller coasters! I just don’t like them. If we are ever at a theme park together, please don’t pressure me to go on any roller coasters. Because I will totally go on it with you, but I will hate it. And the resentment will build. And soon you’ll be complaining to other people about how I’m not returning calls and emails. It will be awkward at gatherings. Let’s just skip all that and ride something like the teacups instead.

I won’t even attempt to explain my near 2 month absence. I’ll just move right along and thank the good people at Sweet Talk for this most delicious and amusing blog cookie they sent last week. It’s almost as if I planned the hiatus until I could review the cookie. Hmmm.

No, it didn’t break en route — that’s where I done ate it. I tried to take a cuter bite, but alas — it was too good. Thanks Erin and Jen!

So this is weird… I have emerged from the Thanksgiving holiday a Battlestar Galactica fan. “Huh, what?” you say? I know! I am usually not much of a sci-fi person, but IT IS GLORIOUS, and so much more than just sci-fi. Edward James Olmos is awesome. I have always loved Mary McDonnell. I want to name my imaginary daughter Starbuck. Of course, now I am completely bummed because we are almost done with season 2, and I just found out that’s all that’s available on DVD. And I’m sure it will be a cliffhanger. And do I have the Sci Fi channel? NO.

I just want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving this week. Thanksgiving is pretty much my favorite holiday. This year, I will be having a very nice, quiet, un-fussy Thanksgiving at home with my husband. I have promised to do all the food, and I believe this means he will clean up! Not sure though. Better check…
Much stuffing will be eaten, zero shopping will get done, and many videos will be watched, including my own personal holiday favorite, The Matchmaker. Being from an Irish family, I can tell you it is 100% realistic (and offensive at the same time). It has nothing to do with the holidays, but I could watch it over and over again and never stop laughing. Kinda like Seinfeld.
All hail Seinfeld.
What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
